I tried it in severe cold and the saw motor would barely turn the chain over at first until some heat built up in the saw.
So, yes to winter oil in the Northern climates if using Poulan Pro in normal conditions.

The oil in the FVP square jugs is really thick. The oval or rectangle jugs that I bought later had a thinner oil in them. Not sure if it was a summer vs winter weight thing or what. Maybe early vs later. Not sure

I e-mailed Menards customer assistance a year or two ago after I bought the FVP because I thought it was rather thin. They claimed to of called the manufacturer & said it was all season oil.

NAPA sells winter weight bar/chain oil
Summer on the left - Winter on the right
Winter weight was $.23 gallon higher last fall
It was less expensive than Stihl winter weight around here anyway.

Just bought 4 gallons of the poulan pro at man-nards this morning... says all weather on the jug. Haven't used it yet but if it's too thick for winter use I'll thin it with some atf.

The rectangle oil jugs work well year round. But you need to bring a pair of scissors if it’s below 30° to cut the stream of oil if it’s from the square jug

I've found bar and chain oil to come in 3 main variables. Summer weight, all season, and winter weight. Thickest to thinnest. The poulan pro oil on sale is similar to other all season oil I've tried. Seems like it will work great. Glad I bought a case.

Absolutely. If you are pouring from close to the oil hole and lift the jug up too fast, I swear it'll pull the oil (taffy?) right back out of the saw.

No idea on this poulan pro stuff. Previous all weather weight I've run has been good below freezing but it gets to a point where true winter blend would be better. I have no idea what temp that is because I have no interest in running a saw in the teens or below. For me an all weather weight oil does 99% of what I need it to. Ultimately I run whatever I can find for @ or below $5 a gallon.

I've been meaning to pick up some kerosene or something like that for thinning out the summer weight stuff.

It’s still $7.09 @ St. Joseph, MO Menards.

The sale appears to be on a specific brand.

Too thick in winter, I thin with clean kerosene (hate the diesel smell). I also don't like the stuff that smells like sulphur (recycled gear oil?). The FVP stuff has worked for us; sometimes on sale for about $5. Have not tried the Poulan Pro brand.

+1 for kerosene. Marked the jug that I thinned. Pop thought we were low on oil and bought Stihl orange jug oil. It is much thinner but seems to oil well.

At any temp below zero the FVP stuff doesn't pour. It pretty much comes out as a solid. Like Kevin said, have a scissors or knife handy to cut it.

I have always used mobile one synthetic in cars. When is cold, hard to pour conventional oil, I figure it would be as thick in crankcase starting.

Kid at Menard's was pretty confused when I said I wanted 6 boxes of the Poulan oil. He did eventually figure it out though...

Yes, they are suffering from bad management. A Menard's clerk told me last summer that her fertilizer was not good quality, just as I was trying to check out. I've never had trouble with it. I suppose it might be a pandemic problem.

BTW, I bought four gallons of bar oil at the sale price. I've never had a problem with it or the alternative brand that they sell.
